Career

O'Malley started in show business as a singer. He sang with Sony Recording Artist and Grammy Award winner Shawn Colvin in college at Southern Illinois University Carbondale before either of them knew where they were headed. O'Malley later used Shawn's music in his hit play Godshow. He studied Acting and Improvisation with Del Close for two and a half years as well as with Don DePollo, Bernie Sahlins, Keith Johnstone, Sheldon Patinkin and Alexander Technique with Ed Bouchard in Chicago.

He was hired to tour with The Second City in 1986. He became a member of The Second City Resident Company (89' - 93') where he wrote and performed in five original revues. He teaches at The Second City Training Center in Chicago, where he has been a Core Faculty Member since 1996.

O'Malley wrote his first play in 2003, an auto-biographical play titled Godshow, which sold out for its four runs at The Second City Chicago and at I.O. Chicago. O'Malley and Godshow were featured on WTTW's Artbeat Chicago with Phil Ponce, it was the Chicago Reader's Critic's Pick twice, and was number 2 in The Sun-Times "Top Ten Cool Things to Do".

Godshow is a comic/tragic play about O'Malley's struggles with addiction, his quest for success, and faith. He has been sober for 15 years because of God.

He is currently shopping theaters and producers for his second full length play 9210 South Winchester, about growing up in a large Irish Catholic alcoholic family, and the emotional harm that stems from that upbringing.
